Focus: denCity

denCity examines the enrichment of real urban sites by a virtual dimension of information and networking, this being accomplished by localizing the virtual. The following pages shall give an introduction into the project The pages are part of the website which forms the core of the project - the main object of the website is to show how the structure of is perceived by the user. For this purpose, dynamically generated maps (ie. customizable maps) are the visual frontend of the project. denCity is created by Kai Kasugai and Philipp Hoppe.

As a promising visualization tool for a long time, virtual reality is not widely used in the typical architecture design and evaluation process due to several constrains, such as high cost of equipment and complex programming script needed to operate. This study describes an alternative and practical way to use low cost virtual reality (VR) system for architectural design, with architecture faculty and students as target audiences. The paper refers to three main aspects: (1) How to integrate VR, not just a visualization tool, but also a design instrument, within the design environment in architecture studio. (2) How to use desktop computer, projector, and game engine to set up an affordable low-cost VR system in the ordinary classroom. (3) Based on the efficiency and rendering quality, evaluate the characteristics of different pipelines to transfer CAD model to the real time engine.
